Red Moon Rounder is entering a new Midwestern chapter after years rooted along Colorado’s Front Range. Led by songwriter Justin O’Connell, the project continues to evolve its mythic, cinematic indie‑folk sound—introspective, shadowed, and shaped by melodies that drift between quiet intimacy and expansive emotional weight. Now based in mid‑Michigan, O’Connell is crafting a new album that carries forward the project’s wandering spirit while honoring the legacy of its Colorado origins.

 

In 2023, Red Moon Rounder released its debut full‑length album Ashes or Dust following an appearance at the MeadowGrass Music Festival. The album was celebrated with a packed release show at Vultures in Colorado Springs and supported by a busy run of performances across the state. During this period, the band opened for national touring acts including Grady Spencer & The Work, Damn Tall Buildings, and Joelton Mayfield, and appeared at major regional events such as Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s Moonlight on the Mountain, Colorado Springs Porchfest, and the Mountain of the Sun Music Festival.

 

The years leading up to the album saw the project refining its sound. Emerging from the disruptions of 2020, Red Moon Rounder shifted toward a more intimate, harmony‑rich, and lyrically introspective direction. Performances resumed with appearances at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo events, the Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Festival, and the Mountain of the Sun Music Festival, while new material was developed and recorded in the band’s home studio throughout 2022 and early 2023.

 

Before the pandemic, Red Moon Rounder had become a familiar presence across Colorado’s venues and mountain towns. In 2019, the band expanded its footprint with shows at Denver’s Black Shirt Brewing, Evergreen’s Little Bear Saloon, and the Gunnison Arts Center, building momentum toward what was set to be a full slate of 2020 performances.

 

The project first emerged in 2018 with the release of its self‑titled EP, introducing a raw, energetic folk sound that quickly found an audience. That year included notable early milestones such as opening for Shane Smith & The Saints and Great American Taxi, as well as an appearance at the FIBArk Whitewater Festival in Salida.

 

From its beginnings in Colorado’s high‑country venues to its current evolution in the Midwest, Red Moon Rounder has carried a sound that blends folk, indie, and Americana into something both familiar and hauntingly its own—an ever‑shifting landscape of introspective storytelling, atmospheric textures, and emotional depth.
